The Panchkula police on Sunday arrested 32-year-old Akram Ahmed, a tailor from Sector 18, for allegedly raping and killing his three-year-old stepdaughter on Saturday.

The body of the child, identified as Heena, was found near the Hafed building in Sector 5 on Saturday.

The police claimed that she was strangled to death after her stepfather raped her behind Suraj Theatre in Sector 1.

“After the post-mortem that was conducted at General Hospital, Sector 6, today, it was confirmed that the girl was raped,” said Sector 5 SHO Mukesh Sharma.

After finding the body, the Sector 5 Panchkula police had registered a case under sections 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code on Saturday. The accused was arrested at 5 pm on Sunday. According to the police, the accused, a resident of Mauli Jagran, confessed his crime during questioning.

Ahmed had filed a complaint at Mauli Jagran Police Station about his missing daughter.

The accused allegedly went searching for places to kill her. The police claimed that around 8 in the morning, the accused first took his daughter to Zirakpur, then Rajpura and then finally brought her to Panchkula and then in the bushes behind Suraj Theatre, he killed and raped her. He then went to Mauli Jagran to report her missing.

The accused, who is originally from Uttar Pradesh, confessed that he raped and killed her stepdaughter to settle scores with his second wife who used to make his son and daughter from his first wife work at home, as per the police.

“The case is still under investigation. We will seek his remand tomorrow,” added the SHO. The accused has an eight-year old son and four-year old daughter. He also has another step-daughter of four years after he married the mother of the deceased around two months back.
