Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be participating in the ‘Extraordinary Virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit’ on coronavirus pandemic through video conferencing on March 26, 2020.
The virtual summit has been planned by Saudi Arabia, which is the current chair of the group. For the first time, the group of major 20 economies in the world will convene virtually to discuss a global crisis.
The Prime Minister tweeted saying that the G20 has an important global role to play in combating the COVID 19 pandemic and that he looks forward to productive discussions.
Virtual G20 summit
The summit is expected to begin at 5.30 pm IST and continue till 7 pm IST.
The leaders of other major 20 world economies will also be joining through video conferencing.
The summit will be chaired by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman.
An action plan to fight the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to be prepared during the virtual summit.
• A common action plan is expected to be formed to combat the rapid spread of coronavirus in the world.
• The leaders are also expected to come with a strategy to reduce the global economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic and measures to tackle it.
• The member countries may discuss and announce an economic package to deal with the COVID-19 situation.
• They are also expected to discuss the steps taken towards the treatment of the coronavirus and its vaccine.
The countries may also exchange the measures they have adopted to control the spread of the infection.
The Coronavirus pandemic has affected over 150 countries across the world as of now. Over 3,80,000 cases have been reported across the world including over 16000 deaths. Italy has been worst affected by the virus outbreak outside mainland China.
This current situation is expected to bring about one of the worst recession the world has ever seen. The global growth outlook for 2020 is projected to be negative.
