• Equality is soul of Indian democracy.
• Democracy is form of Government of people, by people and for people.
• Every citizen of India, who are of age 18 or above, have right to vote. No one can discriminate them on basis of caste, creed, religion, class, etc. This principle is called Universal Adult Franchise.
• Universal Adult Franchise gives political equality, not social and economic equality.
• Dignity is thinking or state of being worthy of esteem or respect.
• dignity of an individual is violated on basis of their caste, religion or gender.
• Government has tried to implement equality, first through Laws of Constitution and second through government programmes.
• There are many democratic countries, including India where issue of equality is a key issue.
• In America, Rosa Park and Martin Luther King started Civil Rights Movement.
Social and Political Life • Civil Rights Movement took place in USA in 1950, in which African American demanded equal rights and an end to racial discrimination.
• Civil Rights Act of 1965 prohibited discrimination on basis of race, religion or national origin.
